An amazing "tree"!
deze mogen jullie zelf even vertalen (is goed voor jullie Engels!) :
the strangler fig (vijg) has adopted a unique survival strategy. It gets a head start in the race for sunlight by climbing a host tree to get closer to the light.
The strangler fig starts life as a seed, deposited by bats (vleermuizen) or birds, high up on the bark (schors) of another tree. Once it germinates (ontkiemd), the seedling (kiemplant) sends cable-like roots to the ground while if continues to grow towards the canopy (het dak/naar boven).
Trough time, the leaves and roots of the strangler fig grow thicker and it competes with the host tree for sunlight, water and nutrients. Eventually the host tree dies leaving the strangler fig standing on its own. A hollow centre is all that remains of the host. From start to finish this process can take up to 1000 years!
wauw..
